Since ancient times gemstones have fascinated mankind. It's hard to say just how many kinds of gemstones exist in the world, but according to Gemstones of the world by Walter Schumann, there are 200 different kinds of gemstones that have been discovered.

Though most gemstones are mineral crystals, which are then cut and polished to make jewellery, rocks such as lapis lazuli and opal as well as organic material like amber and pearl are also considered to be gemstones

Some gemstones are born deep within the Earth’s core and formed over millions of years by unimaginable pressure and intense heat triggered by natural cataclysms. Some formed in space by interplanetary collisions and brought to earth through meteorites!

The gorgeous gemstones used by raw carat to create amazing pieces of jewellery are from all over the world - from the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, from the Herkimer County of New York and from the remote mountains of Eastern Siberia! 

Each gemstone has a wonderful story to tell. Tales that date back to the when time began. Legends that stands tall even to this day. Stories of fame and fortune, of myths and beliefs, of desires and conquests. Often gemstones were considered to have mysterious powers and from there evolved the practice of wearing birthstones.

In the traditional classification, Diamonds, rubies, sapphire and emeralds were considered to be precious and all other gems considered semi-precious. But in modern times, that classification system no longer holds ground. Gems like Tanzaniteare rare and have climbed up the rank while gems like Amethyst, Topaz, Aquamarine and Rose quartz continue to be as popular as they have been, down the ages.
